POOR VIOLET!

A couple of months ago, I wrote about having to get eye drops for Violet the dog due to allergies. Well, after 2 months of going back and forth to the vet getting more drops and a shot, he referred us to an opthamologist because her booger eyes were not going away. Since this doctor is a couple hours away and very expensive, we decided to get a second opinion. One of the places we use to groom the pups has a vet clinic as well so they looked at her eye after getting her all prettied up. Needless to say, Violet has low tear production in both eyes but the right eye is the worst of the two. It is a genetic defect that was inherited from her parents and she could eventually go blind if we do not keep her eyes cleaned out and moisturized. It also was the cause for the conjunctiva that I have to continually wipe from her eyes several times a day. The vet gave us an ointment to put in her eyes 2-3 times a day for life. The vet also said that they do not see this condition a lot which is probably why the other vet did not know what was wrong with her. The only reason she knew what it was when we brought her in was because she had a schnauzer come in, just last week, with the same exact problem. She said that the other pup was a female also and looked almost identical to Violet. I wonder if she was from the same litter as Violet but I cannot ask the owners because they found their dog as a stray about 6 months ago. Anyway, I'm glad that I finally know what is wrong with my pup and can keep up with her care. Even though she is defective, I still love her. :)
